French court rules pork soup kitchen not racist

A French court ruled Tuesday that an organization with far-right links can continue offering pork soup to the homeless, rejecting police complaints that the food distribution was racist.

Police banned the soup kitchen last month, arguing that the handouts discriminated against Jews and Muslims who do not eat pork on religious grounds.

The administrative court said the distribution was "clearly discriminatory," but could not be stopped because the organizers offered to feed anyone who asked for help.

The mayor of Paris condemned the ruling and urged the police to appeal the ruling.

"Faced by this initiative which stinks of xenophobia, I want once again to express city hall's desire to fight all forms of discrimination, racism and anti-Semitism," mayor Bertrand Delanoe said in a statement.

The food handouts are organized by a nationalist group called Solidarity of the French (SDF). It says its "pig soup," which uses pork fat for stock, is country fare much loved by French traditionalists.

"No-one has ever been able to prove that anyone has been refused soup or clothes on the grounds of their religion or race," SDF lawyer Frederic Pichon told France Info radio after Tuesday's court decision.

Does anyone know if there is something that is Kosher, but not halal?

Saudis that I have worked with said that they were permitted to eat shellfish.

Maybe we should shut down the Salvation Army's soup kitchen since they don't offer a pure vegan menu... When will the discrimination ever stop?

How about salt free? Lactose intolerant???

I don't have anything to base this one, but I'd be willing to bet that the number of observant jews seeking a free meal at a homeless shelter is disproportionately low, and the number of muslims is disproportionately high.

Yes, shellfish is halal, but not Kosher.

I'm looking for something that is Kosher, but not halal.

Note to self, increase donations of pork products to food pantries and soup kitchens.

Or those with msg, wheat and peanut allergies.

My religion states I can only eat fillet mignon and lobster.

It's hard to make a meal that's halal AND kosher at the same time. Both go beyond merely pork. What are we to do?

The Diggers used to dish out rice, beans, and peanut (and other stuff), and serve it in hubcaps. Maybe that would be OK?

Of course, giving out wine at a homeless shelter is probably not a good idea, but hey, it's France.

Yes, wine is Kosher, but not halal.

It's a good start.

Anything else?

I bet you don't find much shellfish either! Although oysters and lobster were considered trash food in colonial times...

In the markets I shop at, pork is considerably less expensive than beef, which is probably why the shelter uses it for protein.

As for halal/kosher, one requirement for halal is that certain foods must be prepared while calling on Allah (meat and something I can't remember). But I dont' think that halal beef is verboten in kosher cooking because of that.

I think in terms of the animals, they are the same. However, halal also refers to how the meat is prepared, including how the animal is butchered: they require the butcher to recite certain prayers before he kills the animal. Of course, not all Muslims require this procedure. But, there are more and more Muslims ask for the 'real' halal meat.

All cheese is kosher regardless of where the enzymes are acquired, but cheeses that use enzymes from a non halal animal are not halal. Similiarly, all gelatin is kosher, but it is only halal if it does not include parts (bones and hooves) of a non-halal animal.
